Public Footpath 114: High Fernley Rd Fields Middle Pasture to Station Rd via Low Wood ( Parralel to Tunnel)

Description

This path will take you from Low Woods at Station Road ( Doctor Wood )commencing at GRID SE 14710 26835 onto a track which branches onto FP113 which if followed North opens on High Ferneley Grid SE . Lane or South upward back onto Huddersfield Road GRID SE 15201 26835 via Littelwood Close.

Route

The Station Road Entrance is suitable to park on although parking furher round in Norwood Green may be more secure from the point of view of leaving unattended cars. The sign states that Woodside is 2.5 km through the Woods ( Low Wood via Royds Hall Great Wood ) but is probably more 4 km. A large map is at the right of the entrance

 

 

In this shot the path curves round from station road to lead onto FP 117. To get onto FP113 (High Ferbnely /Hudds Road ) via FP114 walk directly ahead on the bend and you will come to the stile shown below

 

 

 

Looking back on the bend the gap in the trees takes yoy onto FP114 and onto the Slack track or Mineral line up to FP113

 

 

 

 

This stile looking into Low Wood if crossed takes you on to the old mineral line composed of slack and slate from the numerous pit workings around the area

 

 

 

The old mineral line working a gentle gradient taking you upward onto FP 113 which branches at the top Going North (Left) in this view will take younout onto High Fernely Lane or going South will take you onto Huddersfied Road via Littelwood Close

 

 

 

 

 

History

The section of track leading out of Low Wood runs parrelell to the Wyke Railway tunnel

 

Wildlife

Bluebells , Lesser celandine in Spring. Green Woodpecker can be heard echoeing from the Woodland and Crows Caw in winter as they graze the pastures around and about for worm

 

Safety

There are no major safety issues . The station road entrance is realtively level . The section of track (old mineral line ) is on a gentle upward gradient
