Identiying Features
This is the ;argest of our British Mammals Reddish Brown in Summer Greyish in Winter.Fawn patch arounf tail.without black or white. Antlers in male only> Fully grown by Augustand shed in spring. Fully grown males havre two pointa or "Tines" projecting forward from near base of antler , but young males have only one. calves are spotted and are born usually singly in May or June . Mainly broad leaved woodland ( New Forest) and open mountain in Britain . Stags and Hines in separtare herds for most of the year. Mature stags join herds of hinds and young in autumn when they roar and wallow in mud and peat . This is known as the Rutting Season and lasts for about one moth. Stags will compete to gather a Harem of Does or Females in Sept/Oct
Diet
Feed mainly by grazing on Grass, Heather and the young shoots and foilge and bark of trees. They are known to take seabirds in Scotland in order to meet the demand for Calcium when growing antler.
